The École Mosaic project began in 2004, responding to a rapidly changing world shaped by increasing migration, the advent of new technologies, and growing global financial, social and educational challenges. Supported by Fondetec, a foundation for the development of the Geneva economy, and encouraged by Jean‑Claude Brès, Director of the Institut de Formation Pédagogique, Sylvie Johannot develops and launches a school with a clear vision: to offer an education that reflects the new reality and embraces diversity.  

École Mosaic opened its doors with 44 students aged three to six, spanning three classes from Nursery to 3P. A small but committed team of six teachers, two assistants, one pedagogical director and one school head lay the foundations for a learning community built on innovation, inclusion and high‑quality teaching. 

In 2005, our numbers rose to 67 students across four classes, prompting us to add 40 square metres to our existing premises. This was also the year we launched our first summer camps. 

In 2008 we pass the symbolic threshold of 100 students, welcoming learners across seven classes with the opening of the 6P class. To support this growth, the school expands further into Avenue Dumas 21, adding two additional classrooms and a dedicated tutoring room.  

After 18 months of rigorous preparation, we are officially recognised as a Candidate School for the Primary Years Programme (PYP) of the International Baccalaureate. Over the following two years, many teachers undertake extensive training in Turkey, Denmark, Jordan and Spain, deepening their expertise in inquiry-based, international education.  

This commitment to professional development and high standards is confirmed by the school’s first external quality recognition: the Quality School Certificate (QSC). 

In 2009, we welcome 149 students across eight classes, opening the 6P class to support learners progressing through the school. In December, we take over the entire third floor of Avenue Dumas 21, creating a more spacious, age-appropriate environment for upper primary learning.  

In 2010, our community grows to 174 students across nine classes. We open the 8P class, celebrating our very first cohort of graduates, students who have gone on to institutions such as EHL (École Hôtelière de Lausanne), EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne), and the University of Montreal. That same year, we also open a second 1P class, ensuring smaller groups and smoother entry into the school for our youngest learners. 

In 2011, we make a strategic and visionary decision to withdraw from the IB curriculum and begin developing our own programme, rooted in the requirements of both the Swiss HarmoS curriculum and the English National Curriculum. 

In 2012, with 186 students, we officially introduce this new in-house curriculum: a fully bilingual programme carefully designed to meet the expectations of both the Swiss and English frameworks. This bespoke approach strengthens continuity and coherence across all year levels and confirms our identity as a school where two systems genuinely coexist in the classroom.  

That same year, we also enrich our physical education offer by introducing swimming lessons for 5P and 6P students. 

We reach 195 students and celebrate our first decade of existence with a special theatrical production, The 10 Years of Mosaic, which brings our community together.

We also become an Associate Member of COBIS (the Council of British International Schools), joining a global network of 270 schools and 167,000 students, and reinforcing the quality and international standing of our educational offer.  

Academically, we take a decisive step in strengthening our bilingual model by introducing a weekly alternation of French and English in 1P and 2P. As a result, students’ oral comprehension in both French and English make remarkable progress, with learners becoming increasingly at ease switching between languages. 

In 2014, we extend the weekly alternation of languages to our Nursery classes.  

In 2015, we pass the milestone of 200 students and enrich our linguistic offer by introducing Arabic within the framework of our “Foreign Languages and Civilisations” project. That same year, as part of the celebrations for the 200th anniversary of Geneva’s entry into the Swiss Confederation, our 7P and 8P classes become young ambassadors for the city. They take part in the “Geneva Meets Swiss Citizens” project, organised by the Foundation of Geneva, and travel to Aarau in the Canton of Aargau to present the city of Geneva in its international context. 

In 2016, our school community grows further to 226 students. We expand the “Foreign Languages and Civilisations” project – now called the Multicultural Project - by adding Mandarin and Russian alongside Arabic, offering our learners an even wider window onto the world’s cultures. 

We grow to 258 students and open a second 4P class, allowing us better to balance class sizes and offer more personalised attention to our learners. We also expand our facilities by building a large activity room with a professional kitchen, three new classrooms and three new administration offices.  

We further strengthen our commitment to quality by selecting and obtaining a new certification, Swiss School Impulse, which recognises the high standards of our educational environment and organisation. On the international stage, we take part in COBIS competitions and our students compete in the Mangahigh Maths Challenge alongside 18,000 students worldwide.

In 2019, the school grows to 274 students and opens a second 5P class, allowing us to offer smaller groups and more personalised support at this key stage. We also expand our premises to Avenue Dumas 20, gaining three new activity rooms dedicated to sports and arts activities. 

In 2020, our growth continues and we exceed 300 students. We open two classes per grade and further extend our premises to welcome the increasing number of learners joining our community. That same year, we obtain the highest level of COBIS accreditation, Patron’s Accreditation and Compliance, a recognition that attests to the quality, safety and governance of our school in line with rigorous international standards.  

Jean-François Lopez also becomes our new Director General, marking a new chapter in the leadership and strategic development of the school. 

This was a transformative milestone for École Mosaic as we become a proud member of International Schools Partnership. 

As a member of ISP, École Mosaic maintains its unique ethos while also benefiting from being part of one of the world’s largest and most respected school groups.  

These benefits include a variety of international learning opportunities for our students, such as cultural exchange programmes, and global collaborative projects and competitions, which provide students with experiences and connections that span borders and cultures. The world becomes our classroom.  

We open a brand-new fourth floor that transforms our learning environment for upper primary students. This new level offers four additional classrooms, a dedicated art room, a fully equipped STEAM laboratory (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics), a Makerspace and an open library area designed to encourage independent inquiry and collaborative learning.  

At the same time, we create new ground-floor classrooms, a versatile multi-activity area and a new reception, significantly improving the experience for families and giving our community more space for projects, events and everyday school life. 

The performing arts take centre stage with a dynamic new‑format theatre production and an exceptional 20th anniversary show, both celebrating students’ talent and the dedication of their teachers. 

Our pupils shine in the international Mathletics World Day competition, placing 94th out of 6,000 schools worldwide, entering the Mathletics Hall of Fame and taking 1st or 2nd place in every Swiss age group from 3P to 8P, while GL and cantonal assessments once again confirm performance well above averages for English‑speaking international schools. 

All of this is underpinned by the opening of new learning spaces – Early Years classrooms, a music room, STEAM lab, library, theatre room and art studio – giving École Mosaic learners even better environments in which to grow. 

With the opening of our Middle School, students will have the opportunity to further fine-tune their bilingual fluency, continuing a proven pathway that paves the way to international futures.  

As the next step in the school’s academic growth, and following official accreditation from Cambridge International Education, we are also embarking on full Cambridge progression: Mathematics and Phonics will move to the Cambridge programme from August 2026, followed by Languages in 2027. 

These steps mark an important milestone for Mosaic School, strengthening academic rigour, aligning our teaching with internationally-recognised benchmarks and opening even more pathways for our students in Switzerland and around the world. 

Our unique programme enables children to master both French and English, opening doors to a wide range of higher education pathways. We offer a distinctive educational journey that combines the expectations of the Cambridge International Curriculum with the local Plan d’études Romand (PER). As a genuinely bilingual French-English school, every class benefits from a co‑teaching model with native English and French teachers. 

École Mosaic’s quality is recognised and validated externally: we are licensed by the Geneva Department of Public Instruction (DIP), are a member of the Geneva Association of Private Schools (AGEP) and The Swiss Federation Suisse of Private Schools (FSEP), hold the Swiss School Impulse quality certification, and have been awarded the FrancÉducation label for the excellence of our French provision.  

From the start, children learn in both French and English through our distinctive bilingual curriculum, which follows the rigorous standards of two educational systems.  

Students sit standardised assessments in both languages to attest to their bilingualism and track academic growth. GL assessment data show that École Mosaic pupils perform significantly above the average of students in other English‑speaking international schools, already outperforming the GL benchmark in Maths from 5P (age 8) and in English from 6P. By 7P and 8P, they achieve a 96% pass rate in English.  

Cantonal assessments confirm this strong performance: over 88% of École Mosaic students move into the top stream in secondary school. These results are all the more remarkable given that École Mosaic is an inclusive school and welcomes pupils who are not yet fluent in English when they join. 

At our private school in Geneva, students grow into well-rounded individuals equipped with the key competencies for life in the 21st century. In a small, family‑oriented community, children learn not only academic content but how to collaborate, communicate, solve problems and take responsibility for themselves and for others.  

Life skills are explicitly taught in class, reinforced through our House system and enriched by ILOS projects, helping pupils understand what it means to contribute positively to a group and to wider society.  

This comprehensive approach aligns closely with the ISP Life Competencies framework, endorsed by the University of Cambridge, ensuring learners develop the attitudes, skills and mindset to thrive well beyond school. 

At École Mosaic, performing arts are central to our curriculum. From day one, students explore theatre and music with specialist teachers, building confidence, creativity and self-expression in both French and English. 

Through class projects, extra-curricular clubs and school performances, learners experiment with instruments, ensemble work, movement and drama. 

Annual shows and whole-school productions give students authentic opportunities to showcase their skills, collaborate with peers and celebrate their creativity in a vibrant, multicultural community. 

School life continues beyond the classroom with exciting extra-curricular activities that nurture talents and passions. Pupils can choose among sports, artistic and musical clubs, cooking lessons, language workshops in the Mosaic Academy and STEAM-driven projects.  

Each activity is led by a qualified teacher in the relevant discipline and children develop skills while having fun.  

Learners expand their horizons and meet with peers from all over the world through the ISP International Learning Opportunities for Students, including ISP Scientists, ISP Artists, ISP Changemakers and ISP Chess Masters. 

Students learn in a state-of-the-art campus that inspires curiosity and creativity, where flexible classrooms, specialist studios and the STEAM Lab bring science, technology and the arts to life through practical, bilingual projects. 
 
As an ISP Lab School, École Mosaic pioneers the use of EdTech and AI across Europe, integrating technology thoughtfully alongside experiential learning. Children use one-to-one devices in the upper years and shared tools in younger classes to research, experiment and create, while teachers continuously test and refine digital platforms to provide interactive, personalised learning, deliver real-time feedback, and support collaboration, problem-solving and responsible use of technology.

Sustainability is not a side project but a driving force in school life, led by a dynamic, student-run Eco-School Committee. In 2024, their work on the Litter & Waste Project transformed the way our community thinks about waste: students audited our school's waste, challenged habits, and improved recycling across the campus, earning our school the Eco-Schools Green Flag.  

Building on this success, our current Water Project invites learners to treat water as the precious resource it is, and explore how it is used, where it comes from and how it can be protected. Step by step, pupils are turning reflection into action, proving that even at a young age they can drive meaningful environmental change for their school and beyond.

Personalised attention is built into everyday learning. With an average class size of 17 students and two native-language teachers per class, pupils benefit from extensive one-on-one attention and tailored guidance. Continuous feedback and project-based learning help each child understand their progress, reflect on their strengths and take ownership of their development.

Many members of our faculty have been part of the school since the beginning, bringing deep experience, continuity and a strong, caring relationship with our community.

Every child is supported to ensure they succeed in a bilingual environment through a clear, two-tiered language pathway. From 1P, learners who do not yet speak French or English join the Fast Track Programme, to build confidence in spoken language and be able to take part fully in class life. From 3P, they can join the Passerelle Programme, with 4 to 6 weekly sessions so they can master the language and engage in more advanced learning. 

Pupils who require it benefit from adapted teaching, differentiated tasks and targeted small-group or individual sessions with learning support specialists. A full-time Well-being Coordinator oversees early identification and follow-up of any learning or emotional difficulties, and works with teachers, parents and external professionals.

At École Mosaic, our vibrant multicultural community is woven into everyday school life. Rooted in the local Champel neighbourhood and welcoming families from over 50 nationalities, our school offers a diverse environment where more than 40% of children grow up with more than one nationality.

Early exposure to German from 4P and additional language opportunities in the Mosaic Academy and the Multicultural Project allow students to expand their horizons and discover Spanish, Italian, Arabic, Mandarin and Russian.

During the summer, autumn, February and Easter holidays, Mosaic Camps welcome children for fun, engaging activities and outings built around a common weekly theme. Past themes have included Sports Mad, Art and Cooking around the World, Travelling to Outer Space, Underwater Exploration, Jungle Adventure and All Aboard. Each week ends with a special showcase where children proudly share what they have learned with their parents, along with snacks they have prepared themselves.  

Camps take place on our school premises and are led by a highly trained supervisor. Children who are not enrolled at École Mosaic are also warmly welcome to join.
