Middle School Information Session
At École Mosaic, children learn in two languages every day. They grow up with French and English co-teachers in every class, and by the end of Primary they are confident bilingual students. Learners progress through a unique educational programme that blends the Swiss Plan d’Études Romand (PER) with Cambridge International in Mathematics and Phonics (from August 2026) and in Languages (from 2027). Learning is student-centred and active: children lead three major projects each year, using their real-life experiences to explore big questions, present their ideas and create work that has a clear purpose beyond the classroom.
At our bilingual school in Geneva, children are naturally exposed to French and English, both during classes and during interactions with peers and teachers. This ensures they gradually develop confidence and skills in both, becoming fluent by the time they leave our school.
In the first three years (ages 3 to 5), pupils alternate French and English each week. This rhythm naturally creates a short adaptation phase to the new language, which can last from a couple of weeks to a few months, depending on the child. During this time, teachers offer close attention to each learner, using strategies such as asking a classmate to rephrase instructions or comments so that meaning becomes clear without constant translation. Wherever possible, we avoid translating directly, and if a child speaks neither French nor English, we help them connect during playtime with “buddies” from other classes who share their mother tongue.
As understanding increases, we gently encourage children to use the new language themselves. Because speaking requires confidence and risk-taking, we allow them to mix languages freely – for example, “Today, Hélène m’a poussé in the playground” – knowing that this code-switching is a vital stage in oral language development. As they grow, pupils learn to transfer reading and writing strategies from one language to the other. This cross-over of skills means that École Mosaic students become strong, flexible readers in both French and English, with an uniquely deep literary understanding for their age.
For a child starting in 1P at École Mosaic, bilingualism develops naturally and at their own pace. By the end of 4P, pupils are equipped with solid grammar and spelling foundations and typically demonstrate confident mastery of both spoken and written language in French and English. For children who join the school at a later age, it generally takes around three years to acquire, develop and truly master a new language. To support these learners, École Mosaic has created a dedicated structure overseen by the Head of Pedagogy that welcomes pupils with little or no knowledge of French and/or English.
